The Rough Guide To The Music Of The Balkans
World Music Network RGNET 1127 (2003)
“Spanning the complete range of Balkan folk”, it claims. No way. Didn’t the
compiler read The Rough Guide to World Music? Masses of mostly Former
Yugoslavian Gypsy brass/reeds, yet (apart from Moldovans Fanfare Ciocarlia) only
one track from Romania (an old Toni Iordache cimbalom item on which it says
Gheorghe Zamfir plays; he doesn’t), only saxist Yuri Yunakov and choir Angelite
from Bulgaria, and just 1m 41s from Albania. And Athenian Kristi Stassinopoulou
is hardly a representative Balkan.
