I originally reviewed this in Folk Roots issue 109, 1992, but I seem to have missed the point then, so it's re-assessed and rewritten here.
JABLKOŇ & SVĚCENƯ
Jablkoň & Svěcenư
B+N 9101 (1991)
Czech band Jablkoň - classical guitars, voices, bass, percussion, panpipe and
accordion, here joined by classical violinist Jaroslav Svěcenư - has been around
since 1977. The guitars scamper and thrum, voices and other sounds interject
playfully, the violin saws and soars, in quirky, ingenious, direction-changing
music by leader Ingo Bellmann and fellow-guitarist Michal Němec. A neat
sleeve-note analogy describes it as "like a well-crafted building with a wild
back-yard".
