First released in 1972 during Denmark’s previous folk revival, Med Kærlig Hilsen was the product of a team led by fiddler Hans Jørgen and guitarist singer Niels Vilhelm. They steamed through traditional songs and tunes celebrating the dictum of the album’s dedicatee, traditional fiddler Evald Thomsen (1913-1993) that rhythm, lift and spirit matter more than dropped notes. It’s still refreshing, and a timely reminder, with an unstuffy air of “just do it” backed by unsmug musical ability and a hint of the feel of American doyens of the ragged but right such as Eric Von Schmidt or the Holy Modal Rounders.

      The legacy of Evald Thomsen, as player and collector, continues 27 years later in some of the material on Duo For Violin & Guitar. Simply recorded, it consists of dance tunes - allemand, hopsa, reel, polkas, waltzes - plus a couple of songs, from the Danish tradition of the past three centuries or newly added to it by one or other of the duo. They’re delivered with verve and melodic inventiveness by two of the most active and skilled musicians on today’s Danish roots scene, fiddler Harald Haugaard (of Dug, Puls and Sorten Muld) and guitarist Morten Alfred Høirup (American Café Orchestra, Danish Dia Delight and Vingården).
