PETRU GUELFUCCI
Corsica
Olivi Music OLC 961
This record has already caused a stir among the European world music DJs, and
it's easy to see why, particularly in the slow songs. Vibrant cello and limpid
piano over strings introduce Guelfucci's melismatic, passionate vocals, soon
joined by the magnificent Corsican polyphonic singing - here male voices rather
than the female voices of the group, Donnisulana, that was so impressive at the
Silex Records showcase concerts at T&C2 in London in May. Most of the lyrics and
some of the tunes are by Guelfucci, with arrangements by Christophe Mac-Daniel.
This is a full-blooded southern European music whose expressiveness, like that
of flamenco, fado and others, crosses any linguistic barrier.
