SEBASTIÃO ANTUNES & QUADRILHA
Com Um Abraço
Vachier Associados V&A201223 (2012)
A more interesting album than the MOR-folk-strum opener suggests.
Blind singer, songwriter and guitarist Antunes is a
colourful veteran of the Portuguese scene with an attractive light voice that
sails effortlessly into high tenor. He’s joined by the fiddle, frets, bass and
drums of the current members of his band Quadrilha and guests including Sara
Vidal, newish singer with Galicia’s Luar Na Lubre, Cape Verdean Tito Paris and
the gutsy vocals, bagpipes and drums of Mirandês quartet Galandum Galundaina.
Mingling with catchy Portuguese popular-folk styles there’s a gamut of
influences and inputs, such as Cajun/Québécois, Irish uilleann pipes,
Scottish/Irish jigging and reeling, North African gnawa on the traditional
Senhora Do Almortão which he leads on ngoni, and a jam with Touareg
musicians and singers recorded outdoors in the Sahara. Nevertheless somehow the
result is very Portuguese.
The label has also released the remix of the number
with Galandum Galundaina, Cantiga Da Burra, which also appears on the CD,
as a transparent vinyl single in rather striking transparent packaging.
