AMERIIKAN POIJAT
Finnish Brass in America
Global Village CD 810 (1994)
There’s a tradition of brass septets in Finland, playing for dancing, church
services and civic ceremonies, and using material appropriate to each function
and continuous with the rest of the folk tradition (the Folk Music Institute
even has its own in-house septet). Ten American musicians based in Minnesota led
by Paul Niemisto here play polkas, waltzes, schottisches, a jenkka, tangos,
concert pieces and more in a very elegant, fluid, non-stodgy style. Why aren’t
brass bands mentioned when people talk about English traditional musics?
