AMAIA ZUBIRIA
Nabil
Elkar KD-766 (2008)
Amaia Zubiria is a singer of world class, as I find I first wrote back in 1985
of her duo LP with Pascal Gaigne, Egun Argi Hartan. She’s a Basque
equivalent of Mallorca’s magnificent Maria del Mar Bonet or Sardinia’s Elena
Ledda but, unlike those, much under-celebrated in her own land or any other.
Melodiousness flows out of her mouth like soothing balm. Joined by her old
friend guitarist, arranger and producer Gaigne, who has long understood her
value and provided her with arrangements of great elegance, with accordion,
double bass and occasional percussion, she delivers a string of the mostly slow,
caressing treatments in which she excels of songs traditional and by Basque
writers. She should be acclaimed, it’s time she was, and this is perhaps her
finest album.
