KARAVAI QUARTET & IRINA KULYOVA
Babushka Matryona
Catalyst CATA 2 (1999)
Very skilful balalaika and domra quartet from the Russian city of Perm. Yes,
they play Kalinka, but there’s rootsier stuff, and Kulyova is a fine
singer with the tight-throated, hard “white sound”. Also included are clips of
song and speech from 86-year-old collector/singer Anna Nikolaevna Mymrina.
